If you are a high school student preparing to go to college after graduation you might have thought about taking the SAT test. The SAT score you get is one of the major elements of your college application which could determine whether you get into your dream university or not.
Let’s find out what could be a good SAT score.
How the SAT is Scored?
After 2016, SAT is divided into two sections Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, each graded between a range of 200-800. Two scores you get in these sections are added together to get your SAT score.
The highest SAT score you possibly get is 1600 which is called the perfect SAT score. The score you get also changes your SAT percentile rankings, which tells you how well you did in the SAT test compared to all other participants.
What is a Good SAT Score?
|Evidence-Based Writing and Reading||533|
The average SAT score is between 1050 and 1060 which will put you in the 50th percentile. Any SAT score above 1060 is considered to be a good SAT score.
The average math section score is between 520 and 530 which is between the 49th percentile and 53rd percentile. For the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section average score is between 530 and 540 which is between the 49th and 52nd percentile.
If you are aiming to get into an Ivy League college or high-ranking university, you should try to get an SAT score above 1400. Getting a 1400 SAT score or higher score can help you increase the chance of getting accepted into over 100 top colleges and even make you eligible for merit scholarships.
Comparing a Good SAT Score
If you have already taken SAT and received your SAT test score, let’s find out how you can say if it is a good SAT score.
01. Your SAT Score vs National Average SAT Score
The first way that you could say your SAT score is good would be by comparing it to the national average SAT score. If you were able to get your highest possible SAT score also called the SAT Superscore and it is above the national average SAT score then your chances of getting accepted to the best colleges or universities increase.
That would also mean your chances to apply to your target school would have increased. Even though you receive a low SAT score, you may be able to get into some of the schools with a college application that stands out. However, they may ask you to take a few college readiness courses if you were accepted.
02. Your SAT Score vs Target School Acceptable SAT Score
You might already have a target school or a few listed out, the second way to compare if your SAT score is good is by comparing it to the target school’s acceptable SAT score. If you have a higher SAT score than the school’s acceptable SAT score then your chances of eligibility go up.
If your SAT score is lower than the acceptable score, getting accepted to that school might be a long shot. But it might be possible with more help such as going through SAT prep courses and taking the SAT test again.
